Three miles west of Callander, the Corriechrombie bridge over the River Teith denotes the start of this hillwalk to the 2883ft (879m) Corbett. The 'Hill of the Gods' (one suggested meaning) provides great views over Lochs Lubnaig, Venachar & Achray, the Trossachs and so much more - including the Menteith Hills. In clear weather you should also be able to see the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle and much nearer, the Rob Roy Way approach to Callander with Doune Castle a few miles behind, perhaps best remembered as Castle Anthrax in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Sir Walter Scott summed it up: - "Ben Ledi saw the Cross of Fire, It glanced like lightning up Strath-Ire". Possibly in reference to the old Druidic rite of the lighting of the 'Bealltuinn' fires on the summit on the first day of May (old Celtic New Year). "The festival of Beltane dates back to far before the Christian era. It was observed by the Druids as a great festival in honour of the god Belus, and so Beltane is believed to be in its original form Beil-teine, the Fire of Belus. The sun of a Beltane morning was believed to have great curative powers. The sick revived when placed in its rays of healing.
