Crossing The WhitestoneA chance recording on September 11, 2001, place two travelers, one at the wheel, one behind a hand-held camera, both in a vivid historical moment that now serves as the turning point in world history. World Trade Center Building #1 stands alone in the distant Manhattan skyline, smoking like a chimney. The unthinkable, unspeakable is captured and delivered with economy giving witness to an experience that millions shared simultaneously around the globe. As the two traverse the Whitestone Bridge, memories are carved deep within their psyches; at a loss for words, the two sojourners literally and symbolically cross over into a new era. Today, in the wake of September 11th many search for the right tone in which to conduct their lives. Crossing the Whitestone offers one direction and perhaps healing through honoring the powerful raw events of that day in a daringly simple pilgrimage, ultimately to national ruins. This footage was recorded while my wife and I were escaping the horrific disasters of that morning in New York City. This short program was made for survivors, both near and far, who continue to find new meaning and perspective from that major world-changing event. |

Cularis over Whitestone Bridge.Cularis Flying high into flight path of LGA. Big NO NO. Flew near whitestone bridge. The Bridge is 367 feet high. Cularis had to look down on it. Canopy blew off. Because there was a small bent on the motor shaft the motor had the shake using a 13X8 prop. Used a 10X6 prop but still had the shake. Stole prop from me Easy Glide Pro. It works but slow on the climb. The Shaking of motor shook canopy off. |

The Legacy of Whitestone Hill BattlefieldWhitestone Hill Battlefield is where General Sulley's command engaged a large force of Yanktonai Dakota. The Yanktonai did not participate in the Sioux Uprising of 1862, but they were targeted as part of a punitive campaign. This punitive campaign put an end to fighting with Indians east of the Missouri River. General Sully's and General Sibley's punitive campaigns of 1863 & 1864 could be seen as one part in the greater scheme of what we call today, Manifest Destiny. We cannot judge then what we call today, mistakes, misdeeds, or Manifest Destiny by the norms of today, but we can learn from it. Preserve history today! Whitestone Expressway Vehicle FireI was wakened by the sounds of sirens early this morning. There was a vehicle fire on the northbound lanes of the Whitestone Expressway. NYC Fire Department quickly put out the fire. I believe it was an "access-a-ride" van but the vehicle was unrecognizable after the flames were extinguished. |
